Apartment in Caxias

CAXIAS APARMENT

Oeiras, Portugal

Project Title

Caxias Aparment

Location

Oeiras, Portugal

The Caxias Apartment is located in one of the oldest areas of Oeiras, close to the Cartuxa Convent. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Convent housed the facilities of the Padre António de Oliveira Institute, contributing to the preservation of that area while maintaining some particular historical and architectural features. The Caxias area is part of a housing estate with a traditional character and where some urban features have been preserved, having been one of the places least affected by the growth in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s of the parishes in the municipality of Oeiras. In this sense, this area is currently considered to have a high quality of life index and is highly sought after by investors. The proximity to the sea, the excellent location between Lisbon and Cascais with good mobility and transport links, the proximity to the headquarters of major technology companies, schools and universities, and various types of shops and leisure facilities, have all helped to make Caxias one of the most attractive parishes in Oeiras. The "Apartment in Caxias" project developed by Atelier Bruno Câmara Arquitetos arose from the invitation of a young couple to build their first home. The company CVZ Construções carried out the work for this total remodeling project of a two-bedroom apartment from the 1990s.The project opted to demolish existing walls in the entrance hall, living room, and kitchen, thus allowing for the creation of a new large social space, with the kitchen open to the living room, enhancing the spatiality and natural light and complementing it at night with indirect artificial light through the light crown moldings, with these artificial lighting elements being placed punctually on both the ceiling and the fixed furniture. The project's materiality is generated through the use of noble materials such as solid wood and marble stone in the flooring and countertops in the kitchen and bathrooms. These materials contrast and complement neutral elements such as the white fixed furniture used in the kitchen and wardrobe areas, and the white walls, creating the lightness and harmony that makes living in this rehabilitated apartment more contemporary. The private space is enhanced through the creation of a master suite with a dressing room, thus allowing for a more contemporary living space, highlighted by the fixed furniture elements built into the walls, punctuated with indirect artificial light and following a minimal aesthetic with decoration free of excess information and ornamentation. These design proposals aim to provide the apartment with greater comfort and functionality and create a refined, modern ambiance. Its materiality, marble stone, and solid wood define the project. These elements are the link between the different spaces, as they unite the social area with the more private suite area. Also in the interiors, the stone element, in the kitchen area open to the living room, and in the more intimate areas, becomes the central point in characterizing the space, giving the different areas their individuality and the true grandeur of the material. These materials emphasize and contrast their spatiality, creating the basis of the project's concept. The apartment's new spatiality has created a living space that favors large spaces with natural light, taking advantage of the outdoor patio, and the nobility of the materiality. This rehabilitated apartment is not only home to a young couple, but also a way of living in their first lifetime apartment.
